Pakistan floods: flood stirs anger at government as death toll hits 1,200

The death toll from Pakistan's worst floods in decades climbed above 1,200 as rescuers struggled to help the two million people who have been forced to flee from their homes in the country's north-west.

Residents have railed against the government for failing to provide enough emergency assistance nearly a week after heavy monsoon rains triggered raging floodwaters in Khyber-Pakhtoonkhwa province.

Widespread anger poses a serious threat to the already struggling government, which is now competing with Islamist movements to deliver aid to the north-western Pakistani region which already has a strong Taliban presence

Cases of cholera and diarrhoea have been reported among those left homeless by the floods, which have left tens of thousands without access to shelter or clean water.

While the Pakistan army is helping with the rescue effort, the US has pledged £6.4m in aid. Some supplies were able to reach the worst-affected parts of the country when roads briefly reopened, allowing some people to flee the chaos.

Nearly two million people have been affected by flash floods and landslides brought on by monsoon rain in the northwest province of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Pakistani-administered Kashmir, officials said.

In Khyber-Pakhtoonkhwa, an aerial survey showed dozens of villages had been simply washed away.

"The level of devastation is so widespread, so large, it is quite possible that in many areas there are damages, there are deaths which may not have been reported," army spokesman Major-General Athar Abbas said.

"Virtually no bridge has been left in Swat. All major and minor bridges have gone, destroyed completely," Maj-Gen Abbas said of the valley which has borne the brunt of the floods.

The disastrous flooding comes at a time when the weak and unpopular Pakistani government is already struggling to cope with a faltering economy and a brutal war against Taliban militants that has killed thousands of people in the past few years.

Comment

This is pakistan worst flood that had ever occured. About 2 million people had to flee from their home because of this flood and i think that the help offered to them is very limited . The death toll rises as high as 1200 and there are a lot of casualty. The government respond towards this incident is very disappointing and was slow in providing assistant to the victims. It even causes widespread anger towards the government. US even have to pledged £6.4m in aid. They should be more efficient in dealing with these kind of disaster because the longer it drags on , more lives will be lost.

ASEAN ministers warn that haze could return in July

ASEAN ministers warn that haze could return in July

SINGAPORE: The haze could return in July if no concrete action is taken to fight the forest fires in Indonesia.

ASEAN environment ministers issued the warning at a meeting on transboundary haze in East Kalimantan, Indonesia on Friday.

The ministers noted that during the current Inter—Monsoon season from May to June, brief dry spells can be expected. This could lead to occasional surges of hotspot activities in the region.

Increased hotspot activities can be expected in the fire—prone areas in the region during the traditional dry season from June to September. This may lead to transboundary smoke haze pollution from July.

Despite the weakening of the El Nino phenomenon, the region experienced an increase in hotspots from March to April, compared with the same period last year.

The ministers agreed to step up vigilance and work harder to prevent and fight land and forest fires.

They also pledged to reduce the number of hotspots by 20 per cent every year.

The ministers noted the progress in the collaboration between Indonesia and Singapore for the Muaro Jambi Regency.

Seven action programmes have been successfully completed under the Jambi Master Plan.

An additional project on Freshwater Aquaculture Training has also been completed while the Jambi Peatland Management Project is ongoing.

Senior officials will meet again in July in Sarawak, Malaysia to review the fire and haze situation, as well as ongoing activities and appropriate action.
